29 days to go: Question Time

I was leading a PR Workshop at Train 2000 today which is a monthly event I always look forward to.
In Fact by the time I lead the next workshop my year-long challenge will be over.
So maybe it is time to start answering some of the questions you left on my blog yesterday.

Notsupermum wants to know if I will have a mad spending splurge when my year is up?
I wish. Financially things are still very tight and with a soon to be 18-year-old son about to go to university (and three siblings, hopefully, to follow) I can't see that changing anytime soon.
Having said that I really don't feel the urge to buy anything yet. I think the year has helped me see how much stuff I don't wear and how much stuff I buy which doesn't really suit me. I think I will set a budget and be much more discerning.

Shoegal wants to know if I will keep on blogging my dailywear.
Yes. I have made some great friends out there and you have all helped me through some rocky roads along the way this year. However, I will be directing you to a new blog which will still include a dailywear picture but there will be more about my reflection on clothes, my life and the universe.

Heather wants to know - Will I Write A Book?
I have been toying with the idea for a while and I think I have a proposal to put to some smaller publishers. I have learned so much and I would love to share my ideas and findings with other women of a certain age. The working title is: "How To Find Your Style Without Losing A Fortune."

But back to today.
I wore....
Shoes - Clarks
Suit - Next
Shirt - Whistles

87 days to go: The Liver Bird

Bloggers of a certain age may remember the popular 1970's television programme, The Liver Birds.
As a little girl growing up in Manchester I used to watch the programme and dream about living in Liverpool in a flat with my best friend just like Beryl and Sandra - the Liver Birds.
I didn't understand the double meaning until I was much older.
The title of the programme is a pun on the slang name for a young woman and The Liver Bird is the name of a famous landmark in Liverpool where the drama was set.
Liverpool has one of the most famous waterfronts in the world and the three large buildings overlooking the River Mersey are called The Three Graces.
One of the Three Graces is The Royal Liver Building and at the top of the building are two mythical birds - The Liver Birds.
Legend has it that if they leave Liverpool the city is doomed.
Train 2000's offices, where I deliver a monthly PR workshop, has offices overlooking The Liver Building and the two birds.
Here I am standing by the window of the training room and the view from the window.
Whenever I am working for Train 2000, as I was today, I look out of the window at the two liver birds and am secretly thrilled that I am now a real (although slightly older) Liver Bird at last.

*Note: the liver is pronounced like the -iver in diver and not as in an internal organ!

126 days to go: The First Day of Spring

OK so it may not officially be the first day of Spring but in my garden spring has sprung.
My fruit trees are bursting with buds, I dried two lots of washing outside, the earth smells warm and I felt the sun on my arms as I ran today.
I feel so full of the joys of spring - six months of light and warm (er) weather.
This winter has lasted far too long.
Is it a coincidence that I got a lot of work done today?
This evening I was leading a PR workshop and met five delightful women - two best friends who gave up their banking jobs to open a hat shop, a Polish woman who is already setting up her second business since arriving in the UK, a dynamic web designer and a creative agent.
I am sure you will be reading about them before too long.
Tomorrow I back in Liverpool for the final day of my Creativity In Education course so it will be on my bike to the station again.

I have noticed that some bloggers are still taking part in the One Skirt Three Ways Challenge so I will wait until the endof the week to report back.

Today I wore..
Dress - Next
Shoes - Clarks
Cardigan - Principles
Tights - Marks and Spencer

250 days to go: Frontier Woman

I have to say the inspiration for most of my outfits is, to use one of my childrens’ favourite words, “random,” to say the least.
However, today’s outfit is inspired by the lovely, Andrea Sef.
As regular readers will know, my working life is very varied.

Apart from the freelance articles I write and the two days I spend working as a writer in residence at a prison I also spend one day a week as a media consultant for the women’s enterprise agency, Train 2000.
Train 2000 has a special place in my heart.
It was back in 2003 when I was struggling to hold down a demanding job at the Liverpool Echo and juggling it with caring for four young children (then aged, 3, 6, 8 and 11) that they offered me an alternative – working for myself.
All their services are free of charge so I figured I had nothing to lose.
For three months they guided me through the mysteries of business plans, self assessment, book-keeping and generally boosted my flagging confidence until October 31st 2003 I logged off my “Echo Reporter” tag and became a freelance writer and media consultant.
That was five years and I haven’t looked back since. Three years ago the Train 2000 press officer went on maternity leave and they invited me back in an official capacity.
My work at Train 2000 entails raising the media profile of the organization and the thousands of clients they support into self-employment.
Once I month I run a Do It Yourself PR Workshop where I advise new business owners how to raise their media profile.
I love these workshops and can hardly believe I get paid to meet such amazing women. Women like Andrea.
Last year Andrea attended my PR Workshop after launching her own soft furnishings business.
For years Andrea had made curtains for family and friends who persuaded her to start her own business, which she did with the help of Train 2000.
Sadly for Andrea, after a promising start the Credit Crunch took hold and curtains were no longer top priority for many Merseyside households.
Things had got so bad that Andrea was literally down to her last £10 with a court case looming where she was appealing to keep her home.
Like the good mum she is Andrea didn’t tell her lovely daughter (who was preparing for the Miss Liverpool 08 Beauty Contest).
Instead with a smile on her face and hiding a heavy heart she scoured eBay looking for a cut-price gown so her daughter could go to the Ball.
She didn’t find a gown but she noticed that net petticoats were selling night after night.
When most people would give up Andrea decided “in for a penny in for a pound” and spent that last £10 on yards of tulle.
That £10 turned into £60 and Andrea invested the profit back into more material.
In just a few months she turned over £6,000 and now has her very own eBay shop.
Only one shop in Liverpool was selling petticoats, The Rose and Anchor in Wood Street and when they heard about Andrea’s wares they asked her to pay them a visit.
After examining the vast array of petticoats the boutique owner immediately cancelled their overseas order and placed orders with Andrea.
“I hit lucky with the Prom Season but the business is becoming not only recession-proof it is a growing market with weddings and balls and the growth in the followers of Rockabilly and Burlesque. I am now looking for new premises for a workshop. It is so exciting,” she said.
Having met Andrea I can tell you that her success has nothing to do with luck and everything to do with talent, skill, vision and a desire to succeed.
Although my blog is an advert-free zone I am making an exception for Andrea so visit Andrea's store and take a look.
And after speaking to Andrea I scoured my wardrobe for this petticoat which I wore underneath a summer skirt.
I love the way it swishes and flounces AND keeps me warm.
Wearing it with these boots makes me feel like a Frontier Woman.
If you haven't got one already now you know where to look!

I am wearing:
Boots – Clark’s
Skirt - ?
Sweater – French Connection (at least five years old)
Cream thermal top
Red Scarf – Marks and Spencer
Petticoat (from an old dress)
